Friday 5: Celebrating Simplicity

5 simple happenings from the week worth celebrating.

Here's to mold...

and squishy eggs. What?
I'm knee deep in science fair projects and beyond thankful that I'm we are almost done.

Here's to independence.
Vaughn demanded to type part of her paper that goes with her science fair project. It took 6 minutes alone to type the title of the book for her bibliography. I'm not exaggerating.

Here's to accepting the fact that winter isn't done with us.
Just need to let it go.

Speaking of letting it go…Here's to family singsongs.
The Frozen soundtrack has been on continuous loop at the house, in the car, and in our heads for the entire week. I blame Vaughn but the rest of us are just as guilty. Someone is always singing it and we can't help but to join in. Can't get it out of our heads!

Cheers!

Spring Break. The Window to What Summer Break Will Look Like.

I always treat Spring Break like a test run for Summer Break.

How do the kids handle multiple trips to the grocery store?

How do the kids get along together at the house?

How do the kids deal without having solid plans each day?

How does one act while the other has a friend over?

How many times does one accidentally dump a pound of lunch meat on the floor?

You know. Those types of everyday situations that may test your sanity over a long stretch of time.

Thus, Spring Break is always the time where I start planning for summer camps.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

How about you? Have you started planning for summer?

Because they say posts are better with pictures here's one from yesterday, our last day of break. Vance had his first baseball game and unfortunately the temps were somewhere around 30 degrees. Vaughn spent a fair chunk of time in Justin's arms and covered with a blanket. Our games have been cancelled for this week due to low temps. Baseball gods where are you? We need some weather!!!

Friday 5: Celebrating Simplicity

5 simple happenings from the week worth celebrating.

Here's to my buddies that have kept me busy this Spring Break week.
I keep reminding them to focus on the "break" part. They're all about the "spring" action.

Here's to silly doodles that help me air my frustrations.
This is me dealing with snow that's in next week's forecast.

Here's to using all the brushes.
Vaughn is a live out loud type of gal.

Here's to the science fair projects currently living in the kitchen.
May they be over with soon. Because smells are starting to form.

Here's to this sweet guy who can't handle the pressure of sneaking one piece of licorice into the movie theater.
I do his dirty work for him because he still holds my hand and calls me, "Mama". Vaughn? She wears her Ring Pop while walking in for all to see. Lucky to have these two.

Cheers!

Happy it's finally Spring!

Happy Spring!

I know I'm not the only one that is happy about this being the official day of spring. Here's hoping that Mother Nature acknowledges its presence and starts to warm up already. We're all ready!!!

Trader Joe's had bunches of daffodils for $1.49 yesterday so the kids and I picked up a few bunches. Seemed like a good way to start a new season and International Happiness Day.

What am I happy about today? It's supposed to reach 64 degrees today and the kids and I are going to soak it up.

What are you happy about today?

Spring Breaking with Abe

The kids are on Spring Break right now and we're having fun not doing much. We snuck away for a mini overnight trip last Thursday to Springfield, IL to catch up on all things Abraham Lincoln.

The kids enjoyed the museum more than I thought they would but our favorite was visiting Abe's house. Warning, tour guides don't like when you lean up against Mary Todd's wallpaper.

Justin keeps it old school and signs for lunch with Vance's choice of souvenir from the gift shop.

Speaking of souvenir's…I kind of fell in love with this guy. While he's not original to the Abe Lincoln time period I do believe he would look great outside near the patio.

Happy Wednesday! If you need me, I'll be at my big chicken-less house, waiting for the weather to warm up so Spring Break really feels like Spring Break!

Friday 5: Celebrating Simplicity

5 simple happenings from the week worth celebrating.

Here's to no broken bones!
Not that bone bruises are worth celebrating, but it could have been worse. He's smiling again and almost 100%.

Here's to 2 glorious days of 79 degree weather.
I won't mention that it snowed the very next day, but things are looking up. I'm thawing as we speak.

Here's to successful parent/teacher conferences.
I mean, I already know how awesome my kids are, but it's so nice when their teacher's agree. :)

Here's to yet another end of a gymnastics session.
She earned her first pin and was super excited to show it off.

Here's to the creative minds that are responsible for this book
Vaughn (and I) can't wait to make some of our own fairy couture.

Cheers!

Worm Attack

A few Tuesday's ago I set out to make a quick birthday card. I ran down to the basement, grabbed what I needed from a bookcase, and headed back upstairs to work. I don't like being in basements so I always work like this. On the trip upstairs I felt something on the underside of the box in my right hand. I assumed it was dried hot glue and continued on.

I unloaded my materials onto the kitchen table and got to work. A few minutes passed and then I reached for the box. I picked it up (felt the dried glue on the back again), took what I needed out, and began working until I realized that I needed to see the instructions on the back of the box. I grabbed for it one more time (felt the glue on the back AGAIN), flipped it over to find not dried hot glue but a dead, dried worm stuck on the back. It took me a second to recognize it as that was not what I was expecting at all.

I screamed. I'm usually not a screamer but I screamed a whole lot. I couldn't stop myself. I sounded just like Ferris's sister at the end of this 26 second clip.

I dropped it and ran over to the sink to scrub my hands. My ears were ringing and my heart felt as if it would beat right through my skin. Because of a stinking worm, yes. Ever since the day a heathen of a boy dropped a worm down the back of my shirt is when I started loathing them.

I unknowingly fondled that beast at least 3 times and was grossed  and weirded out. How the hell does that even happen? Can worms climb vertically? Maybe the worm was lonely and attracted to those squiggly lines on the box.

I did what any normal person would do afterwards. I covered the remains with a napkin, used a pencil to push the box away from where I was working and went on with my business.

When it was time for dinner I carefully carried it out of the kitchen and placed it on the dining room table. I confess that it is still there but I have been dusting around it. Ridiculous? You bet. I keep waiting for it to disappear on its own but no luck. Here's hoping for tomorrow.

Friday 5: Celebrating Simplicity

5 simple happenings from the week worth celebrating.

Here's to stumbling onto old pictures of chubby baby cheeks.
Oh, how a squishy 2 month old Vaughnie makes me smile.

Here's to pancake muffins.
This new-to-me technique is the only way pancakes will make an appearance a school day.

Here's to creative minds.

Here's to being thankful for the things you never think about until they stop working.
Our lower level furnace stopped working which meant breakfast and coffee with winter coats.

I'm short a picture this week but here's to furnace repairmen and to the warm temps that are supposed to be here today!

Cheers!

My Go-To Birthday Gift for Boys

This is how I handle birthday gifts for Vance's buddies. (Especially when the party sneaks up on me.)

My go-to birthday gift always involves a gift card of some kind and then something small to go with it.

I never have theme-y wrapping paper and often use these cupcake boxes. (Ordered in bulk years ago and they come in handy for everything. Everything.)

I used an old party invite to decorate the outside.

Cut-it-out ala Dave Coulier.

I taped the baseball onto the top of the gift box and then used the green part of the invite for the gift tag.

Done.

(Then repeat for a double birthday party.)

We had a snow day yesterday so my days will all be off this week. Happy Monday Tuesday!
